Week 5: Volcanic activity in China

China has had a long history of volcanic activity, with many of it's most active volcanoes located in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. This region is home to some of the most active volcanoes in the world, including the Longmenshan volcanic field, which is located in the Sichuan province. (I've actually talked about this area in one of my previous blogs.) This region has experienced numerous eruptions over the past few centuries, with some of the most recent eruptions occurring in the late 19th century. In addition to the Longmenshan volcanic field, there are several other active valcanoes located in China, including the Chaingbaishan volcano in Jilin province, and the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka. These volcanoes have the potential to cause significant destruction and disruption to such, the Chinese government has established a number of monitoring systems to keep track of their activity.

In addition to the statement above, when a volcano is going to erupt in China, the government will issue a warning to the public. This warning is typically issued through the media, such as television and radio broadcasts, as well as through text messages and emails. Furthermore, the Chinese government will deploy emergency response teams to the affected area to help evacuate people that are in risk and provide assistance. These teams are also the ones that provide information about the volcano, the potential risks, and any safety precautions that should be taken. Thankfully, China's government is more than helpful in most situations by setting up shelters and providing food and medical aid to those who need it/ were affected.

  1. Hi Daniela,
I enjoyed reading your blog post this week. I had very little knowledge of what China's volcanic activity was like. Since there are quite a few very active volcanoes, it is definitely very important that the government has systems in place to alert and assist the public. China has similar warning systems to my country, Japan. They both send out alerts to the public via text, television, internet, radio, etc. Though it would be terrifying to be in the vicinity of a volcanic eruption, country's preparedness methods will make a big difference.
